The following report concerns sections 1.1, 1.2, and 1.2.2 of the LaGrange College Strategic Plan.

CIRCULATION 2001-2002

Circulation of library materials (excepting Reserves) totaled 10,267 in 2001-2002 which was up from 9,729 in 2000-2001.  Reserve items circulated totaled 1,911 in 2001-2002 compared to 1,795 in 2000-2001.  The total circulation for 2001-2002 (including reserves) was 12,178.  Items circulated per FTE student was 14.0.   This was up only slightly from the previous year (13.38).  (LSP 1.1 & 1.2.2)

Our target goal of 21 items per FTE by end of the 2004-2005 academic year will be difficult to make unless there are radical improvements in the use of library materials by faculty and students. (LSP 1.1 & 1.2.2)

Circulation of items by faculty improved significantly in 2001-2002 with 1,943 items checked out compared to 1,457 in the previous year.  Most administrators at the college are included in statistics for faculty.  Items checked out to students also increased significantly from 7,759 in 2000-2001 to 8,980 in 2001-2002.  (LSP 1.1 & 1.2.2)

Use of the library by alumni decreased this year from 120 items checked out in 2000-2001 to 63 in 2001-2002.

The largest increase in circulation by media-type was for videos with 1,004 items circulated in 2001-2002 compared with 775 in the previous year.  At the end of the FY two locked video cabinets with glass doors were installed in order to provide more visibility for expensive videos that are kept on reserve.  The cabinets are located on the main level of the library and plainly visible upon entering the library.

The challenge remains to increase the circulation of library materials at LaGrange College.  New members of the faculty have responded well and, for the most part, are making good use of the library’s resources.  Librarians intend to focus on new faculty because it is with this group that we have witnessed the most success in the past.

PLANNING FOR A NEW LIBRARY

In February 2002 we received the final “preliminary” report from our consultant, Mr. Jay K. Lucker.  The report was shared with members of the President’s Leadership Council.  The report was accepted and recommended to the Building & Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees.  The Board of Trustees is expected to act on the report and Mr. Lucker’s recommendations at the October 2002 meeting.

The process of developing a building program for a new library at LaGrange College began in February, 2001, when Dr. Charlene Hurt, University Librarian at GSU, gave a presentation to faculty and students entitled, “Building a Library for the 21st Century.”  In June of 2001, the director of the library, Mr. Loren L. Pinkerman, wrote letters inviting proposals from academic library consultants.   Jay Lucker, formerly director of the M.I.T. library, was selected as the consultant for the college in September of 2001.

Mr. Pinkerman organized twenty focus groups on campus with participation from all segments of the campus community.  The results were tabulated by Lisa Farrow, Assistant to the Director of the Library, and mailed to Mr. Lucker for review together with other materials including library annual reports, college catalogs, etc.

We anticipate that the Board of Trustees will act on Mr. Lucker’s report at the Board of Trustees meeting in October 2002.   (LSP 1.2)
