Facilities Master Planning Discussion, Linda Buchanan
A diagram was presented which
represents the placement, size and shape of the New Library (Attached). There of course will be topographic,
lighting and additional programmatic issues to be addressed. In addition,
During construction of the
new library the parking spaces on the Hill will no longer be available and will
be relocated to South of Vernon.
College Street and Harris Street start to play a very important role. And the bigger issue of how we cross people
safely over Vernon. The DOT has a
formula (In laymen’s terms equals 200 crosses per day) which must be present in
order to justify a cross walk and traffic light.
Need to construct 150
residence beds on campus, which may be placed in between our two apartment
style residence halls or erected south of Vernon which would ensure the
requirements for the DOT formula were in place and force the hand for a cross
walk and traffic light.
Concerns were raised about
space and where we will put 150 new residence; class sizes, parking, study
rooms, etc. Dr. Boozer stated that Dr.
Simmons has all the data which convinces the point that space is not an issue.
Kim Myrick suggests it’s a
scheduling issue and the ability to spread them throughout the day.
Dr. Buchanan stated that the
lot west of Vernon and Candler can be re-striped to accommodate 125 additional
parking spaces.
The concerns were asked if we
would ever get to the point of zoned parking and or increased parking
fees. Dr. Buchanan responded no on both
points and in her mind; a good rule of thumb for everyone, is a three
minute walk of their building entry.
Mr. Geeter asked about the
possibility of a two story parking deck?
Phyllis Whitney responded that the cost would be 10 – 1.
Dr. Boozer asked if there was
anything else for the good of the order today.
Dr. McCoy asked about a new
science building. President Gulley
responded that it was so far in the future, but he did say there were plans for
a wet lab to be connected to the current science building which would be
renovated.
4:50 p.m. Meeting was adjourned.
