Present:
Hampton (sub for Birkeli), Buchanan, Duttera, Gulley, Harrison, Hartman, Hearn,
S. Johnson, Kraemer, S. Mallory, McClanahan, McCoy, McMullen, Pinkerman,
Sauter, Simmons, Slay, S. Smith, Major and Bob Thomas.
President
Gulley welcomed the Council and discussed recent events in the community. Dr. Hearn led a prayer for the meeting. Dr. Johnson made a motion to ratify the
minutes of the September 20th meeting, Dr. Kraemer seconded the
motion. All agreed and the minutes
were approved.
President
Gulley asked the membership to review the report from Sarah Beth Mallory
regarding environmental issues.
This report reflects research she completed this past summer in a study
for the College. The Academic Advisory
Committee has approved the thrust of the report and it has been presented to
the Curriculum Committee of the faculty.
President Gulley has asked Ms. Whitney to take steps with National
Management to develop a comprehensive recycling program for campus. Plans are to engage an arborist to evaluate
the trees on campus and make plans for future use of green space.
Dr. McClanahan updated the Council on the status of the Self Study. He stated that the Steering Committee has reviewed the entire list of “musts” statements. The chairs of the Self-Study Committee will be visiting administrators to gain updates on the progress of each recommendation so that they can be incorporated into the Self Study document. President Gulley commented that he has spoken to Dr. Jim Davis, head of our visiting committee, and that Dr. Davis plans a pre-visit to campus in mid-February. President Gulley praised Dr. McClanahan on an excellent presentation to the Board of Trustees last week.
Dr. Sauter reported about enrollment in the Nursing Program. The strategic plan calls for an increase in enrollment to 50 students, current enrollment is 31. She called attention to an attached chart that shows a steady decline in students since 1995, the last year an associate degree was offered for nursing. This is a nation-wide trend, as all of healthcare is experiencing this decline. Dr. Sauter stated that Admissions is publishing specialized nursing brochures, the new Kratina Scholarship is assisting seven pre-nursing students, and early notification of freshmen interested in nursing should be positive implements. Dr. Sauter is also planning a career fair with West Georgia Health Systems to promote nursing as a second career. This will be held on November 27. Children’s Health Care of Atlanta is considering the possibility of offering a scholarship to LaGrange College students, similar to the program at Emory University. Our Public Relations department is preparing new advertising publications and Admissions is planning to do a mailing of this information to high school Biology and Chemistry teachers. Dr. Sauter stated that her department is happy with their new location in the Callaway Academic Building.
Bob Thomas reported about the Servant Leadership Initiative, a copy of his handouts is attached. He stated that there is some confusion about the Servant Leadership program and Service Learning. The definition he follows is that Service Learning is a tool to educate, but that Servant Leadership is a behavior, an attitude to model to our students. The Seekers Program is a part of the organizational development for our institution. This program has been revised to serve two groups, a fall group and a spring group. The Fall group began with a weekend retreat in September, lead by Andy Fleming. Monthly meetings are held and the group will complete their sessions in December. The current group is comprised of faculty and staff from diverse units of the College. During a three-year term, the Seekers Program should serve approximately 70 faculty/staff members of the College. The Callaway Master Plan is a part of the community focus of the Servant Leadership Initiative. A series of editorials were published in the newspaper to support this effort. An announcement will be made next week giving the

recipients of $47,000 in grant money that is available to faculty and staff for community projects. The assessments from previous grant recipients are good. A resource library is available at the Servant Leadership House. These materials can be used to aid with integrating Servant Leadership into the classroom or as another resource for materials not in the Library. A mid-level staff development session will be held in January. A senior-level group was completed in August. Plans are to have another development session with the Board during the next year. The United Methodist Consortium group will reschedule their visit to LaGrange; the previous date of September 13th was cancelled because of the halt in airline service. The Servant Leadership Fellows is made up of 12 students; these earn a $3000/year scholarship. The group met for a three-day retreat in August, lead by Andy Fleming. They exhibit good leadership abilities and encourage and support community work engagement by our students. A grant of $21,000 was given to the Student Government Association to fund community service efforts. The grant money to the SGA and faculty brings visibility to the program and helps to better define the work of Servant Leadership. Mr. Thomas added that he feels a few amendments need to be made to the Strategic Plan to make the plan more meaningful. Item #3.1.2 needs to be amended from 15 students to 12 students. Item #3.1.3, creating a Board Committee focused on Servant Leadership; Mr. Thomas feels that this is a possibility within a few years. It may take 3-5 years to get the committee formed, but that discussions have taken place with the committee chairs.
Dr. Simmons submitted a report on Ethics in Syllabi; a copy is attached. Several departments commented that their reports were not included, but that ethics are included in their course syllabi. Dr. Kraemer remarked that the Institutional Review Board should review any research that takes place at the College for ethical and humane treatment of the subjects, human or animal. He will draft an amendment for the Strategic Plan to include this item. Item #2.1.4, the action plan needs to be revised to include Graduate Programs.
President Gulley reminded the Council that the agenda shows the date (Nov. 29th) and topics of discussion for next months meeting, so those participating can review the items and be prepared. Dr. Hearn reminded the Council about the meeting tomorrow with the first candidate, Jan Gabrielson, for the Director of IIT. The other two candidates will be meeting on campus within the next two weeks; those candidates are David Garrett and Bill McCoy.
Respectfully submitted,
Shirley Harrington
