Recommendation from the Academic Policies Committee
Regarding the Annual Report and Recommendations prepared and submitted
by the Sustainability Taskforce to President Gulley, August 2006
Given the efforts and recommendations of the Sustainability Task Force, the APC recognizes the need for the faculty of LaGrange College to engage in a serious conversation about how sustainability issues could be incorporated into the curriculum. Thus it is the recommendation of the APC that the report of the Sustainability Taskforce, recently presented to President Gulley, be forwarded to the faculty of LaGrange College for their review and consideration. In particular, the APC recommends that departmental colleagues review and discuss the findings of the taskforce and their curricular recommendations. In particular the APC recommends that department faculty:
1. Consider those areas of their curriculum in which sustainability components could be incorporated
2. Consider the possibility of developing interim courses with sustainability as a component/theme
3. Report back to the Sustainability Taskforce their concerns and conclusions
It is also the view of the APC that the Sustainability Taskforce should serve as the central contact point for these conversations. Given their expertise and familiarity with the issues involved, they stand poised to advise, consult and assist departments as they consider the role sustainability can play in their curriculum. Further, the APC recommends that administration consider the implementation of a training program in sustainability available to the entire faculty. Again the Taskforce could play a significant role in the organization and implementation of said training.
Moreover, the APC recommends that items # 3 and 4 in the Taskforce’s academic recommendations be forwarded to the Core Review Task Force and the respective Core program directors for consideration within their programs and among their faculty.
Any formal proposals for course, minors, etc. will, as a matter of procedure, proceed through the Academic Policies Committee
