The Major in History at LaGrange College

The faculty of the history department believe that students who select to complete a major course of study in history should have the foundation knowledge and understanding of the discipline, developed by classroom instruction and individual study, necessary to provide them with the opportunity to:

pursue graduate study within the discipline

bullet

pursue a professional degree in a selected field of study

bullet

pursue a career in secondary education

bullet

seek employment in a public or private sector field including, among others, entry level historic documentation and preservation, and historic research.

Graduates of the Department of History may be found pursuing careers in business, law, education, politics and government, broadcasting, journalism, the ministry and many other fields of endeavor.  In all, our graduates have found that their education has provided a foundation for their careers and for their growth in life.

Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern (2 courses required)

HIST 3301  Greco-Roman World

HIST 3302  The Middle Ages, 350-1350

HIST 3320  The Renaissance and Reformation, 1350-1600

 

Modern European History (2 courses required)

HIST 3372  Europe 1660-1870

HIST 3374  Europe 1870 to the Present

Electives

An additional 9 semester hours in upper level (3000-4000) history courses are required to complete the major.

Success in achieving the objectives established for the major will be demonstrated as follows:

bulletsuccessful completion of each major course with a grade of C or better
bulletsuccessful completion of the senior history seminar and defense of the senior thesis before the students and faculty of the department
bulletsuccessful completion of a major field examination during their senior year

Those wishing to major in history are encouraged to declare their major during the beginning of the spring semester of their sophomore year.  Successful completion of History 1101-1102 and History 1111-1112 before entering the major is highly desirable. This can be achieved via AP, CLEP, PSO et al options.

What can one do with a degree in history?

Minor in History

A minor in history is available to students.  The minor must include at least 12 semester hours, 6 of which must be in 3000-level or above courses.  Please consult with the department chair for course selection.
