2006-2007

Once again the Phi Alpha Theta and the department of History triumphed at the Major Fair brining home the prize for best table for the third consecutive year. 

The Fall semester field trip included a visit to the "Louvre at the High" exhibit and camping at Stone Mountain.

Interim term saw Drs. Cafaro and Shirley take classes to Italy.  From their bases in Cortona and Rome respectively, students visited Florence, Assisi, Sienna, Orvieto, Rome, Anzio and Pompeii. 

Spring semester will see history students judge the regional History Day competition (March 2), travel to Andersonville and the Prisoner of War Museum (Date TBA), present at the Tennessee regional Phi Alpha Theta Conference (March 24), and participate in Phi Alpha Theta/History Department sponsored presentations by senior history major Barbara Krumbach and Dr. Shirley.  Ms. Krumbach will be presenting on her semester in Japan and Dr. Shirley will be previewing a paper scheduled for presentation at the 42nd International Conference on Medieval Studies.

 

2005-2006

Fall semester is off to a quick start.  Phi Alpha Theta and the department of History will be taking its fall field trip to Westville, Ga., the reconstructed and working 19th century town.  In January, 2006 we will tour the Troup County Archives and historic downtown LaGrange.

ATTENTION!  ATTENTION! For the second year in a row the History students, under the leadership of the Phi Alpha Theta officers have won the distinction of "Best Table" at the 2005-2006 Major Fair held October 3rd in the Turner Assembly Room.  Of the challenge associated with being defending champion Dr. Cafaro, advisor to Phi Alpha Theta declared: "We were committed to aggressively defending our title."

2004-2005

The history department's faculty continue active programs of scholarship and professional development.  2004 saw the publication of the New Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in which Dr. Mills contributed several entries.  He also has the lead article in the most recent volume of the journal Methodist History.

This past fall Dr. Shirley's new book The Secular Jurisdiction of Monasteries in Anglo-Norman and Angevin England was published by Boydell and Brewer.

In mid-December Dr. Cafaro traveled to the Mayport Naval base in Jacksonville Florida to lecture for the Strategy and Policy seminar of the United States Naval War College.

The department's fall semester field trip was to the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.  The spring semester field trip will be a visit to the infantry museum at Ft. Benning.

The history department was well represented at the 2005 Regional meeting of Phi Alpha Theta hosted by the University of West Georgia.  Russ Stayanoff,  Margaret Bagwell, Aeli Johnson, Liz Lowe, Jason Freeman, and Judson Price all presented.  Mr. Stayanoff's paper won second place in the best undergraduate paper category.  Congratulations Russ!  Both Mr. Stayanoff and Mr. Price have been invited to present their papers at a Phi Alpha Theta session of next fall's Annual Meeting of the Southern Historical Association.  Congratulations to all our presenters on a job well done.
