Phi Mu Fraternity, the
second oldest organization for women, was founded as the
Philomathean Society at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia by these three women:
Mary DuPont Lines, Mary Myrick Daniel, and Martha Hardaway
Redding. The Philomathean Society was founded
at Wesleyan College on January 4, 1852. Founder's Day for Phi Mu Fraternity
is March 4,1852 because this is the day that the members announced their new society
to the college and the world. As the group grew and moved toward national
affiliation, the Greek name, Phi Mu was adopted. Phi Mu is known as a
"fraternity" because of the Greek origins of that word as opposed to the Latin
origins of the term "sorority." Phi Mu now has over 130 chapters in colleges and
universities throughout the United States and thousands of alumnae living throughout the world. |
